What are the benefits of getting a new boiler?
If you’ve had your boiler for a long time (especially if it’s been 15+ years), it's probably time to upgrade to a safer, more efficient boiler. And there are plenty of benefits of upgrading.
Lower energy costs
Newer boilers are smaller, quieter, and more efficient than older ones, making your money go further, so your gas and electricity bills are lower, month-on-month.
Energy efficient
An eco-friendly boiler is kinder to your pocket (see above!), but it’s also better for the planet, pulling on fewer resources to create the same toasty warm results.
More reliable
Because who likes stepping into a freezing cold shower? A newer boiler supplies your family with hot showers and warm radiators, without the need for constant repairs.

What are the different types of boilers?
There are plenty to choose from! So, what are the different basics?
Combi boilers provide heating and hot water on demand, meaning it heats the water whenever the hot tap is running. It doesn’t need a separate hot water cylinder or tank to store cold water – saving plenty of space. They’re slim, small machines, and often found in medium-sized homes. And because they only heat water when needed, they’re very energy efficient.
System boilers are hot water cylinders – typically kept in laundry airing cupboards. They’re connected to the central heating and store hot water in the cylinder ready for later use. Ideal for larger homes with multiple bathrooms, they can feed multiple taps and showers without impacting that precious water pressure.
Conventional boilers – also known as regular or heat-only boilers – need a hot water cylinder and a cold water storage tank. So, as you can imagine, they need a lot of space. They’re best for homes with high demand for regular hot water.

How much is a new boiler?
The cost of a new boiler varies, depending on the type, make, and the company that installs it. When you compare boilers, you can see the different offers and costs.
To be prepared, a new boiler can cost a few hundred pounds to a few thousand. Prices vary, which is why it pays to get a range of quotes before deciding.
That said, with the money you’ll spend upgrading your current system, you’ll save a noticeable difference each month on your energy bills – which can help to offset the initial cost.

New boiler: FAQs
If your boiler is on the old side (15 years), it’s a good idea to update to a new, modern, more efficient appliance. If your boiler isn’t quite that age, there are some signs that it’s time to consider a replacement, including:
It has recurring issues
Your heating bills have increased without you using more energy
It’s taking longer than normal to heat water
It’s making strange noises
It’s been leaking water
It’s been making strange smells*
*If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999. Gas leaks are dangerous and should not be ignored.
To stay ahead of the game, here’s what to look for when getting a new boiler:
Boiler type: Take a look at the different boiler types above (combi, conventional, etc.) to get an idea of what you think would suit your house. Consider the space, what the water pressure is like, and how you tend to use your water.
Size: Where does your current boiler live? If it’s tucked away in a cupboard and space is an issue, avoid signing up to get a large boiler that you won’t make the most of. Consider the space it’ll occupy as well as the kW (kilowatt) power. The more water you heat and the bigger your home, the more power (kW) you’ll need.
Cost: Naturally, you should consider the cost of this investment. A new boiler can range from £500 to £3,500+, plus installation fees. Crunch your budget to get an idea of how much you’re willing to spend. Keep in mind that even if you’re planning to sell your house soon, having a new boiler can increase your house price by 4%!
Reliability and reviews: In general, newer boilers are more reliable, safer, and are less likely to break down. Browse reviews from users and independent testers online to get a feel for which boilers stand the test of time. And, just so you know, we only work with the leading brands, such as Ideal, Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Vokera, and Alpha.
It’s hard to say. A new boiler is an investment, so ideally it should last as long as possible before having to replace it. The minimum lifespan of a boiler should be 10 years, but well-serviced boilers can last as long as 15 years. We always recommend servicing your boiler regularly, as well as reporting any issues, leaks, and concerns to a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Installing a new boiler can range from a few hundred pounds to a few thousand pounds, depending on the type of boiler and the system you already have in place. To find the right boiler for your budget and you've already exchanged on a property, compile some quotes by comparing boilers.
Depending on when your new boiler’s warranty ends, you should get your boiler serviced for the first time when it’s close to a year old. After that, we recommend getting annual servicing to keep it in tip-top condition.
Landlords are required to have all boilers serviced by at least once a year.
A combi (or combination) boiler is a popular central heating boiler in the UK. It requires little space in the property and supplies hot water directly to your taps and heats the radiators without the need for a hot water tank.
Combi boilers are economical because they generate hot water on demand, so you only pay for the hot water you use. They tend to be energy-efficient and affordable, too.
Each boiler will have an efficiency rating according to the ErP or SEDBUK systems.
ErP is the European rating system for boilers, ranging from A (as efficient as possible) to G. All modern UK gas boilers are legally required to hold an A rating.
SEDBUK is the same rating system, but it adds exact percentage scores to each boiler for extra detail.
You can! Buying a boiler online is easy, convenient, and you can do all the research beforehand in your own time. Once you answer a couple of questions, you can compare boiler quotes. If you've exchanged on a house, you can then choose your boiler. Then, you can book the boiler to be installed by a Gas Safe engineer, who will handle the installation and set-up.
Boiler installation times can take anywhere from 4 – 6 hours, up to a couple of days. It really depends on the type of boiler, accessibility, gas safety requirements, and the complexity of the installation. Once your engineer gets the scope of the job, they’ll be able to give you a more precise answer of how long it’ll take.
When you compare boiler quotes, the price you see includes the cost of the appliance, installation of the new boiler, and the removal of your old appliance.
The providers we work with include:
Boilerhut
Plusheat
Warmzilla
Heatable
Boiler Central

All boilers come with a warranty – this varies depending on the manufacturer and model. Typically, it lasts between 1 to 5 years. That said, many manufacturers now offer free extended warranties, which can range from 2 to 10 years.
